Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico visited the IIN.
On 17th December visited the IIN, Amb. Patricia Espinosa Castellano, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, in the company of Amb. D. Cassio Vitale Luiselli Fernandez, Ambassador of Mexico in Uruguay and Amb. John Biehl del Rio, Representative of the Office of the Organization of American States in Uruguay.
The visitor was received by the Director General of the IIN, Mrs. María de los Dolores Aguilar Marmolejo, who together with Dr. Norberto Liwski, Senior Specialist of the IIN, conducted a synthetic presentation of the objectives and actions of the institutional Action Plan for the period 2007-2011... Special Meeting of the Directing Council of the IIN: "Analysis of the implementation of the new laws of child issues, public policies and institutional reforms within the framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Child"
Pursuant to resolutions of the Directing Council of the IIN, the Special Meeting was held in Quito, Ecuador, from 29 to 30 November 2007 with the participation of 22 Member States, as well as representatives of various organizations invited as observers. The meeting of delegates was developed under the theme "Analysis of the implementation of the new laws of child issues, public policies and institutional reforms within the framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Child", with the contribution of invited specialists and contributions from different Members of the Directing Council.
The Special Meeting was marked for favoring the dialogue and the exchange of highly specialized knowledge in different areas of incidence, standing out the legal field, public policies and investment allocated to childhood and adolescence. It also served as the framework for the presentation of progress made in the implementation of the Action Plan 2007-2011, adopted at the 82th Regular Meeting of the Directing Council, as well as actions aimed for institutional strengthening.

The Inter-American Children’s Institute in a joint effort with the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations High Commissioner of the United Nations for Human Rights, introduces the publication Public Policy and Children’s Human Rights. On November 20, the IIN received the CPAT International, Mr. Ernesto Galmez (Regional Officer for Americas) and Ms. Helga Fourcade and of Ms.Gaby Reyes, Project Officer of Save the Children Sweden.
During their visit they worked together with the technical staff of the IIN towards the installation of an Observatory on Child Commercial Sexual Exploitation as it is stipulated in the Action Plan 2007-2011 for the IIN. |

"Peace Culture and Prevention of Youth Violence. Central-America, Mexico and the Dominican Republic”
Mr. Norberto Liwski, Senior Specialist of the Inter-American Children’s Institute participated at the conference "Peace Culture and Prevention of Youth Violence. Central-America, Mexico and the Dominican Republic”, which was held in San Jose, Costa Rica on 15 and 16 November, 2007.
The meeting stressed that violence has devastating consequences on children, and exposes the survivors for the rest of their lives to the dangers that suppose health, social, emotional and cognitive problems.
The conclusions and recommendations agreed on this Regional Conference represent a very important step in the definition of public policies considering the complex scenario on which it is necessary to produce actions aimed to change the increasing violence circuits. The integral view of these policies has been presented with the need to strengthen the rights approach concurrently with the strengthening of the democratic governance.
It was appreciated the need to join regional and inter-agency efforts regarding diversity and assuming also the existence of common factors among different countries.

On October 25, Mrs. Rosa María Ortiz, Member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child met at the Inter-American Children’s Institute headquarters with the Director General of the IIN, Mrs. María de los Dolores Aguilar and Mr. Norberto Liwski, IIN Senior Specialist.
They discussed possible cooperation and coordination mechanisms between the two institutions dedicated to children. Mrs. Ortiz was particularly interested in the IIN’s initiative of providing technical assistance to the OAS Member States in relation to the submission of initial and periodical reports on the implementatiion of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its two Optional Protocols. Also, it was considered the support that the IIN itself and with other institutions in the Americas gave to the Day of General Discussion held in Geneva on 21 September on the issue resources and investments allocated to the children.
In relation to the notes timely exchanged between the authorities of both institutions, they reiterated the commitments regarding the Committee's support to the States in their different responsibilities in relation to public policies with rights approach.

The Second Meeting of Governmental Experts on International Child Abduction organized by the IIN and the Hague Conference will take place at Buenos Aires, Argentina in the Palace San Martin, from 19 to 21 September 2007.
The Work Plan of the Program to prevent and remedy cases of international child abduction by one of their parents, will be outlined.
Representatives of 19 OAS Member States; the Secretary General of the Hague Conference, Mr. Hans Van Loon; the Director General of the IIN, Mrs. María de los Dolores Aguilar Marmolejo; international organizations and high authorities of the host country will participate.

The Director General, Maria de los Dolores Aguilar will be participating in the “Empowering the Future Leaders of the Americas” (19-20 September, Washington).
The event aims to present the vision of the youth of the Americas to the Permanent Council through interactive sessions involving the OAS Member State ambassadors, representatives of inter-American agencies, OAS Departments and young leaders, on such topics as:

As it is of your knowledge, on last Wednesday August 15, several localities of Peru were affected by an earthquake of high intensity, leaving serious consequences in the population, mainly in the cities of Ica and Pisco. Today, it is essential to spread our solidarity towards the peruvian population, considering the emergency situation that continues prevailing to a large extent of the damaged population.

82nd Regular Meeting of the Directing Council of the IIN.
On 26 and 27 July, 2007 the Directing Council of the Inter-American Children's Institute held its 82nd Regular Meeting, coinciding with the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Institute. The OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin opened this important event that was attended by the Vice President of Colombia, Dr. Francisco Santos and the Mayor of Cartagena, Mr. Nicolás Curi. It also counted on the participation of Ms. Sara Oviedo as President and Delegate of Ecuador to the Directing Council of the IIN, and Ms. Kirsys Fernández de Valenzuela as Vice President and Delegate of the Dominican Republic to the Directing Council; Delegates from 19 countries in the region, and Observers from non governmental and inter-governmental organizations.
