The Eleventh Ibero-American Conference of Ministers and Authorities Responsible for Children was held in Lisbon

On 18 and 19 June, María de los Dolores Aguilar Marmolejo, Director General of the IIN, took part as an observer in the 11th Ibero-American Conference of Ministers and Authorities Responsible for Children, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal. The central issue was “Preventing inequalities and guaranteeing children’s rights: the importance of information technology and education”.

The first Ibero-American Conference of Authorities Responsible for Children took place on the occasion of the Third Ibero-American Summit Meeting of Heads of State and Government which was held in Brazil in 1993. Since then, the Conferences have been held regularly and have become an opportunity for the promotion and exchange of experiences and good practices on the issue of childhood and adolescence.

During the 11th Conference, the Ministers and Authorities responsible for children in Ibero-American States issued the Lisbon Resolution, in which they stated that due to the current international economic crisis it is necessary to reinforce the comprehensive protection of children, highlighting the role of education in an attempt to overcome socio-economic inequalities.

By means of this Resolution the signatories resolve, among other matters, to promote and strengthen cooperation between Ibero-American States in the fight against child pornography on the Internet and other technologies, committing themselves to the exchange of experiences and the development of initiatives which will contribute to the design and improvement of monitoring and evaluation systems for children’s rights.

In addition, the Lisbon Resolution also establishes the promotion of equitable access and use of new information and communication technologies, as instruments for social inclusion and in the recognition of the importance of teachers and other actors in the field of education.
