IV Meeting of Directors of Civil Registry, Identification, and Vital Statistics from Central America and the Caribbean
The globalization of civil identification is currently a concern of the countries in the region and international organizations which, together with society at large, assume the obligation of extending and strengthening civil registry systems. The IV Meeting of Directors of Civil Registry, Identification, and Vital Statistics from Central America and the Caribbean, held in the city of Mexico on 29 July - 4 August, 2007, gathered all those who are responsible for managing this issue in various countries, as well as experts from, inter alia, the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), and the International Civil Identification Commission (CIEC), for the purpose of providing relevant elements for the interpretation of this issue in the hemisphere and its treatment through the exchange of best practices and the establishment of relevant agreements.
The Inter-American Children's Institute (IIN), in its capacity as an OAS Specialized Organization, was invited to participate and made a presentation on "Universal Birth Registry and the Right to Identity: A Key Element for the Strengthening of Democratic Governance and the Exercise of Children's Rights", providing for an overview of this issue in the region and how the enforcement of this right relates to participatory life in the states.
