"1st Inter-American Essay
1   Contest

The Inter-American Children's Institute (IIN), a specialized organization of the OAS (Organization of the American States), calls citizens of the Member States of the OAS to participate in the "1st Inter-American Essay Contest on childhood, adolescence and the family" to be held under the following terms:

CONTEST RULES

FIRST: The prizes will be:

1st Place: Prize of $2,500.00 and diploma

2nd Place: Prize of $1,500.00 and diploma

3rd Place: Prize of $1,000.00 and diploma

Plus 5 special mentions with diploma

All the winning essays will be published in the IIN magazine "INFANCIA" circulated throughout the hemisphere.

SECOND: Open to all persons within the Member States of the OAS.

THIRD: The works to be presented must be original and unpublished and must deal with any topic related to children, adolescents and the family from any perspective that would promote an inter-disciplinary examination of the subject, having as term of reference, the current international rights on these issues. The length should be a minimum of forty pages and should be presented in duplicate, double spaced and one sided and written in either Spanish, English, French or Portuguese.

FOURTH: The work should not be signed or have any inscription or logo and must be headed by a title or slogan. This title or slogan, as well as the name of this contest, should be written on an enclosed sealed envelope. Inside that envelope the full name of the author will be written, together with his nationality, address and phone number. A diskette with a copy of the work should be included to be used by the electronic media.

FIFTH: The deadline to submit this work is July 31st 2002. It should be addressed to:

Works posted within the deadline will be included, provided that the postal date on the envelope proves it. Also works sent by e-mail will be accepted as long as the envelope described in the paragraph four is sent by regular mail.

SIXTH: This announcement will receive wide publicity through all the Member States of the OAS, whose embassies will be provided with all the necessary information.

SEVENTH: The Jury will be presided by a well known, internationally acclaimed academic accompanied by two other qualified jury members.

EIGTH: The decision of the jury is final and will be known by September 30, 2002.

NINTH: The IIN will respect participating authors' rights but reserves the right to publish the works it deems valuable in specialized magazines with proper acknowledgment of the author.

TENTH: The works submitted which did not receive a prize will be included in the bibliographic database of the IIN, with due respect for author's rights.

ELEVENTH: The presentation of works for this contest implies full acceptance of these rules and of the decisions of the Jury in their interpretation or application.
