National
boundaries are no barrier to the illegal transportation and victimization
of children. There is widespread recognition that the problem of missing
and exploited children is substantial and there are increased demands for
enhanced responses. The lack of cooperation and networking among
international bodies remains a major obstacle in preventing and settling
missing children cases. The
protection of children from victimization requires a coordinated,
comprehensive and global approach. As a
Specialized Organization of the OAS, the IIN is charged with the promotion
of successful and innovative programs that address issues related to the
rights of children, adolescents and the family in the Americas. This is
achieved in part by technical initiatives and strategic alliances. ICMEC
is the global leader in the effort to alleviate the issue of missing and
exploited children. Its focus is to develop an international response by
building a global network to disseminate images and information, provide
professional training, and advocate changes in laws, treaties and policies
to protect all children. Focusing on child welfare issues of mutual interest in the Americas our two organizations are committed to working together to address the following areas of shared interest:
